409 Whoa, I don't think I've ever stopped in the middle of a story and gone back to reread the first several chapters so many times before. No, it's not a convoluted mess of a story. That's not why I had to go reread earlier passages. I just needed to constantly adjust my perspective. The author did some amazing things here. I don't want to spoil any of it.I would imagine the issues with the police department do feel a bit contrived. The character of Joe is pretty badly sacrificed so that the story can progress. That's fine by me. I know another reviewer had wanted Joe and Dani to "happen". Well from the very beginning of this story, Dani takes a hard second look at Joe and makes me laugh out loud at her assessment of that prospect.Dani would never be so harsh but in my view, Joe is the worst kind of male chauvinist pig, really, because he isn't the obvious kind, so it's easy to fall for his charm and kindness. You have to go along and see him constantly, against repeated experience to the contrary, insist on interpreting every action by a woman or every plea or every judgement as originating from some sort of psychological trauma that the poor hysterical dear just couldn't handle. What. A. Dunce.By now even Brian has a clue. Which makes him much more interesting in this story. Yes, he does arrest Dani yet again, but at this point they both seem to be enjoying that a little too much!Walt and Dani are lovely when they're together, but as the series goes on, the problem with these two is that Walt is so severely limited as a ghost in how much of a day to day part of Dani's life he can be. It restricts a lot of their banter and snuffs out opportunities to show off their chemistry. It's actually left to the Chief MacDonald to step in and fill the role of the male confidante and companion in conspiracy. Chief and Dani have great chemistry and banter together. As friends. They make great friends. If not for their lack of romantic interest in each other, they could transition well into a couple at this point if the author decides to go there.I've done a complete reversal on my very first impression of Lily and consider her a wonderful asset to the story now. That is the thing I love about this series, the characters get such an opportunity to grow and develop.
